Hashnode BootCamp Fall 2023: Day 2

Hashnode BootCamp Fall 2023: Day 2

Today, I was opportune to attend two sessions despite my tight schedule. The first of these two sessions focused on building a personal brand, and the second was on developer experience. Stay with me as I share my learnings and experiences.

Session 1: Building a Personal Brand - Camila Ramos

Camila started talking about positioning and why it is important to come before branding. Positioning is the key to branding.

Positioning creates a unique way of creating an image in the minds of your audience. It defines what makes your impact unique to your target audience. To build a brand, you must identify and effectively communicate your position to your audience.

Branding, on the other hand, is the confidence that someone can speak on your behalf when you are not in the room. Branding is the response to positioning. Branding makes people attribute some unique intangible quantities to your name.

Key Learnings From The Session

  • Know the kind of content that will capture your audience.

  • Your content needs to be unique from what others might be doing.

  • Effective positioning will create a solid foundation for your brand.

  • Focus on one thing at a time. You can’t be all things to all people.

  • You can expand your reach once the branch has established itself by leveraging its strengths.

  • Be authentic and communicate effectively.

  • Maintain the same style across all your social media platforms.

  • Grow your social media by picking a platform you are most comfortable with.

  • Create an audience and network with people who share similar content.

  • Make your blog simple, easy, and enjoyable.

Session 2: Developing Better Developer Experiences - Brandon Strittmatter (Co-founder, Outerbase)

Brandon started by explaining the evolution of developer tools and how their designs have changed. Developer Experience lets people understand, at first glance, your docs, applications, and API.

He further discussed the Developer Experience Lifecycle. The illustration below summarizes the lifecycle.

Key Learnings From this Session

  • Interact with your users when building a product. Do not solve problems blindly.

  • Use existing patterns and systems.

  • When stuck, find a solution and use it.

  • Abstract complexities, do not remove them.

  • Always be up-to-date with emerging technologies.

  • Provide solutions to solve developer problems.

Conclusion

Day 2 came with insightful sessions. Camila, who spoke about building a personal brand, did so excellently by differentiating between branding and positioning. Brandon explained Developer Experience, and how we can make our products better.
